There is growth in the tech market — but only if you know where to look.
Here’s advice from 2 leading market watchers on where to look for tech growth.
IDC: ‘innovation accelerators’
For growth, look to the latest, greatest new technologies, says IDC.
The market watcher believes these and other new technologies — it calls them “innovation accelerators” — will boost worldwide spending on all IT and communications (ITC) tech. IDC now predicts total worldwide ITC spending to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6% through 2021, reaching $5.6 trillion.
IDC says specific technologies in this fast-growth category include the Internet of Things, robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality, drones and 3-D printers.
Virtual and augmented reality systems should help boost IT spending
Spending on these innovation accelerators will grow at a much faster 17% this year, IDC predicts. By 2021, it adds, spending on these technologies will represent 75% of total ICT spending.
Traditional IT spending will grow over the next 5 years, too, IDC adds, but at a slower rate of 3% to 4% a year. As for telecom spending, it will grow only 1% a year, IDC expects.
Gartner: PCs still matter
How about the market for devices — PCs, tablets and smartphones? Shipments are growing here, too, but only by an expected 2%, according to a new forecast from Gartner.
The research and advisory firm predicts that more than 2.35 billion devices will ship next year, up 2% from this year’s expected shipments of 2.3 billion devices.
If you sell PCs, there’s good news here. The world has not gone completely mobile. “Our latest online end-user survey shows that users depend just as much on PCs and tablets as they do on smartphones,” says Ranjit Atwal, a Gartner research director.
But there’s also some not-so-good news, which you probably already know. Gartner says PC users hold onto their systems, while their smartphones tend to get replaced frequently. As a result, Gartner expects traditional PC unit shipments to decline by 4.4% next year, while smartphone unit shipments increase by 2.4%.
But hang on. Business PC shipments will increase by year’s end, Gartner says, driven by faster Windows 10 replacements.
So now that you know, go for the growth!
